CCD to seek AG advice on Minister’s staff

05 May 2019

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) is to seek the Attorney General’s advice with regard to three employees of a ministry arrested at the Central Mail Exchange with 600 letters allegedly defamatory towards the President and promoting hate among communities. The three suspects had been arrested by the Police on 2 May and handed over to the CCD for further investigations. The three suspects were employed at the Ministry of Public Enterprise, Kandyan Heritage, and Kandy Development headed by UNP Kandy District Parliamentarian and Leader of the House and Minister Lakshman Kiriella and the letters were reportedly addressed to various Buddhist temples across the country. The CCD said that the suspects had so far revealed that the letter was based on an article published on a news website and it was only a translation of that article. Meanwhile, issuing a press statement, Minister Kiriella also stated that the purported letters under scrutiny by the Police were translations of excerpts of a news report on a prominent website and intended to be circulated to Buddhist temples and politicians. Kiriella further stated that he inquired about the incident but did not find anything that was defamatory or that could arouse racial discord in these letters.
