CDA Chair temporarily resigns over Ragama hostel incident

By Buddhika Samaraweera Following the controversy over the incident where a vehicle belonging to the Coconut Development Authority (CDA) had been used by a group of persons when they attacked a group of students at the male hostel of the University of Kelaniya Faculty of Medicine in Ragama on 2 February, the CDA Chairman Keerthi Sri Weerasinghe, has temporarily resigned from the said post until the conclusion of the probe into the same. A senior official of the Plantation Ministry told The Morning yesterday (9) that Weerasinghe had handed over his resignation letter to the Minister of Plantations Dr. Ramesh Pathirana. Furthermore, Weerasinghe had yesterday (9) told the media that he had decided to step down from his post temporarily. Claiming that an investigation into the incident of several students of the Faculty of Medicine in Ragama being attacked by a group that had also used a vehicle belonging to the CDA to arrive at the faculty’s male hostel, is currently underway, Weerasinghe had told the media that he would resign until the investigation is concluded. Weerasinghe was not available for comment. Four medical students who were injured in the attack by a group of persons on the said faculty’s male hostel at around 3 a.m. on 2 February had been admitted to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama. Speaking to the media, the students stated last week that a group of persons who had arrived in two cars had broken into the hostel and assaulted them. Meanwhile, one of the said group of persons and a car belonging to them had been apprehended by the students and the suspect and the car were handed over to the Ragama Police. The car was identified to be one that belongs to the CDA and an official identity card of a member of the Coconut, Kithul, and Palmyrah Cultivation Promotion and Related Industrial Product Manufacturing and Export Diversification State Minister Arundika Fernando’s personal staff had also been found in it. Following Arundika Fernando’s son, Avinda Randula Jehan Fernando being remanded in connection with the said incident, Arundika Fernando also resigned from the said State Ministerial post until the investigation into the matter is concluded.
