CEB dismisses allegations for emergency power purchasing

10 Sep 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday (9) denied moves of attempting to purchase costly emergency power to meet the ongoing power shortage. Instead, the board clarified that it would go for short-term power purchases early next year, The Morning learnt. CEB General Manager (GM) Keerthi Karunaratne told The Morning that no such decision was taken by the board to purchase emergency power. When asked whether a decision was made during the board meeting held on Tuesday (8), the GM stressed that no such decision was made at the board meeting. “We are not going to purchase emergency power but will go for short-term power purchases next year. This year, there was no such necessity,” he added. However, a CEB senior engineer who wished to remain anonymous told The Morning last week that the board was facing difficulties in meeting the demand for power at present due to the power shortage. According to him, the CEB was managing at present due to the drop in demand during the initial stages of the coronavirus pandemic.
