CEB workers to strike on 10 May

  • Demand 36% triennial wage hike

  The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Joint Trade Union Alliance (JTUA) has declared a 24-hour strike from 10 May midnight, demanding that their salaries be increased by 36%. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (8) on behalf of the CEB-JTUA, CEB National Workers’ Association Secretary Ajith Devapriya said that breakdown and power plant workers would participate in this strike continuing their demand for a 36% wage hike, adding that they would not settle for any other agreement. “A draft of the collective agreement has been issued by the CEB management offering a 22% wage hike and a statement has been issued by the Chairman offering 25%. We will not agree to anything less than the 36% hike and we have declared a 24-hour strike on 10 May where our breakdown and power plant workers would step out of their duties.” The CEB-JTUA held a protest yesterday in front of the CEB head office in Colombo demanding their triennial wage hike. Speaking to The Morning earlier, Devapriya said that the hikes that were demanded by the workers had not been given to them during the previous hikes in 2014 and 2018. He further said that the losses incurred by the CEB are due to political decisions and not due to the fault of the workers. The CEB incurred an approximate loss of Rs. 45 billion in 2020, with the institution facing consecutive losses since 2014 when the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant commenced its operations.
