Celebrating World Health Day: Raising awareness with SL’s young artists and media personalities

17 Apr 2021

By Mahika Panditha   In light of World Health Day that fell on 7 April, the globe banded together to support a fairer, healthier world. This year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) calls for immediate action to end all health inequities as well as to make it easier for everyone to attain better health. Health is a basic human right, where each and every person deserves to lead a healthy life irrespective of age, gender, race, or economic status. Despite numerous improvements globally, the efforts and wins have not been distributed equally. It is no secret that the inequities have always been in place for various communities and countries alike. In recent times, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, these inequities have become even more prominent and impacted said communities and countries that are already at a social or economic disadvantage, putting them at more risk regarding health than before. The pandemic has shed light over the fact that most of the diseases and illnesses these communities and countries face are preventable. The pandemic has also slowed down any progress being made. The WHO is now calling on leaders globally to monitor the health inequities and disparities in their respective nations in order to understand the root cause better as well as to ensure each citizen is given proper healthcare and has access to good-quality health services. To commemorate World Health Day in Sri Lanka, a brilliant group of like-minded young artists and media personalities came together and took the initiative to raise awareness about mental health in Sri Lanka, with the understanding that many will show their support for health issues such as cancer, diabetes, and so on. Mental health remains overlooked in Sri Lanka, although in recent times, media coverage and discussions have opened up. Speaking to Kanishka Kavirathna, a former finance consultant and now singer, songwriter, and music producer, the artist who spearheaded this initiative, he said that mental health is paramount to everyone’s wellbeing but yet is an aspect which is overlooked and neglected. “To add to that, Sri Lanka has a stigma and misunderstanding around the matter and it is paramount that we normalise it. We need to be more open about it. We need to look at it like any other illness and take the necessary steps to obtain the help that is needed. I initiated this project because the more people talk about it and actively advocate for  it, the easier it is for us as a country to get a dynamic shift from where we are to where we should be. And we will keep doing exactly that,” he said. Joining Kanishka are four other extremely talented young artists and media personalities: Ridma Weerawardena, a popular young-generation artist; Devashrie De Silva, a flamboyant singer, presenter, and vocal coach who has been in the industry for a formidable period of time; Saasha Karunarathne, a familiar face you may have seen as a presenter for the past decade and now the Digital Presenter for The Voice Sri Lanka; and Dilmy Ranaweera, an experienced model who is currently a presenter at Noize TV. The team has gathered to create and raise awareness about mental health-related issues. They urge the public to acknowledge and normalise reaching out for help, whether it be professional or not. To begin the project, the team has launched a video, which is the inception of the project. You can find the video on any one of the team members’ official Facebook pages. The team hopes to continue to advocate for mental health in the long run with the support of the public. It is imperative that as a nation, we band together to voice our concerns about the important matters. Making Sri Lanka a more open and safe space for tackling mental health issues is the team’s agenda and so should be everyone else’s.
