  • Police advise women to beware of motorcyclists, pillion riders

  • Female ‘accident faking’ duo nabbed in Narahenpita

Incidents of chain-snatching along with the incidence of a racket involving the faking of accidents for monetary gain are on the rise, The Morning learnt.  According to Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana, the chain-snatching incidents targeting women were reported from the Yakkala, Wellawa, Walasmulla, and Kalmunai Police areas, where four such incidents of theft had been reported. “All the perpetrators were riders and pillion riders of motorcycles, and women are becoming victims of crimes of this nature. All are therefore advised to take precautionary measures in order to prevent such incidents,” he added. Women who walk along isolated roads or in poorly lit areas are becoming victims of these snatchings, and these thieves have been identified as various organised criminal groups or drug addicts. The Police have, during the past three weeks, arrested 13 suspects who have been involved in such snatch theft incidents. Meanwhile, another racket has come to light in and around the Narahenpita and Kirimandala Mawatha areas, where two women driving a scooter have been observed to drive around the vicinity slowly, and feign being knocked down when motorists attempt to overtake them. Speaking to The Morning, DIG Rohana said that the duo in question were arrested and subsequently enlarged on bail.
