Real Madrid, who kicked off their Champions League quest with three points on the road against Inter, were stunned by Moldovan champions Sheriff who managed one of the most remarkable results in Champions League history on Tuesday (28) as they upset the 13-time winners Real 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain.

The competition’s newcomers showed that they would be no pushovers in their debut group-match two weeks ago by defeating Shakhtar Donetsk in Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria, a breakaway state in Moldova.

Despite dominating possession, Carlo Ancelotti’s men failed to impress. Striker Jasurbek Yakhshiboev sounded the first alarm for the Merengue when he headed Sheriff ahead 25 minutes into the first half.

The hosts racked up no less than 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes, but could find no way past Georgios Athanasiadis who had a night to remember between the posts. Just past the hour mark Madrid would recover from that early scare, as Karim Benzema converted from the penalty spot to level at 1-1.

But there was still time for one more twist, courtesy of Luxembourg international Sebastien Thill. The midfielder smashed home a brilliant half-volley in the 90th minute to restore Sheriff’s advantage, and they were able to see out the final nerve-wracking moments to claim victory.

* Messi scores his first for PSG

Lionel Messi saved his best against Manchester City as he opened his tally at his new club with a stunning goal in Paris Saint-Germain FC’s (PSG) 2-0 win in Paris.

For 70 minutes, the former Barcelona superstar had ambled around in his first European appearance at home for his new club. City passed the ball around him, chasing an equaliser after Idrissa Gueye’s eighth-minute strike.

Messi suddenly sparked into life with 15 minutes remaining, running with the ball for the first time in the game before exchanging passes with Kylian Mbappe and curling a sumptuous strike into the roof of the net.

It was the 34-year-old’s first goal for his new club, but his 121st in the Champions League and 27th in 35 appearances against English teams - 15 more than any other player.

* Liverpool record their second win

Liverpool kept their winning run intact with a stunning 5-1 victory over Porto to remain top of their Champions League group.

Mohamed Salah’s first goal set them on their way at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto, Portugal. Sadio Mane extended their lead on the stroke of half-time with a back-post tap in, and Salah contributed his second with a clinical finish into the bottom-right corner.

Mehdi Taremi’s header briefly gave some respite for the hosts but Roberto Firmino added the fourth for Liverpool with home goalkeeper Diogo Costa stranded after woefully charging up the pitch to attempt to clear. And the Brazilian rounded off a comprehensive victory late on after pouncing on a rebound from Curtis Jones’ volley.

* Griezmaan back in the score-sheet with Atletico

Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez scored a winning penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time against 10-man AC Milan in the Champions League. Suarez chipped in from the spot to complete a late comeback after Milan substitute Pierre Kalulu handled.

The hosts played with 10 men for 68 minutes as Franck Kessie was sent off following a second yellow card. Rafael Leao had given Milan the lead, but Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann equalised in the 84th minute.

It is the second time in three games that Suarez has scored a late winner, after the Uruguayan netted twice - including one in the 91st minute - in a 2-1 comeback win over 10-man Getafe on 21 September.
