Child abuse cases: BASL to support setting up special court

25 Aug 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) plans to render its fullest support towards the establishment of a special court for child abuse cases proposed by the Minister of Justice. “We will extend our fullest support as soon as the Minister of Justice consults us on the matter,” BASL President Kalinga Indatissa PC told The Morning. Indatissa went on to say that he believes there should be special courts for narcotics and computer crimes as well. “Legal cases are being delayed continuously and there should be special courts to hear cases related to narcotics, computer crimes, etc.” Furthermore, he urged the Government not to appoint courts in an ad hoc manner akin to the last Government. “These courts must be set up in a constructive way, seeking input from all relevant stakeholders. They shouldn’t make the mistake of setting up courts in a haphazard manner like the previous Government.”
