14 Aug 2018

By Easwaran Rutnam China is looking to boost its image following negative publicity in recent times and has invited local journalists on a guided tour to inspect several Chinese funded projects in Sri Lanka. The Chinese Embassy in Colombo has invited local journalists for the tour of the project sites this week. The Chinese Embassy, in its invitation, has said it will take the journalists to Matara and Hambantota and provide accommodation at the luxury, Shangri-La Hotel in Hambantota. The journalists are to be taken on a guided visit to the China-Sri Lanka Friendship Primary School in Yatagampitiya, the Matara-Kataragama Railway Extension Project (Phase 1) at the Matara-Beliatta Sector, the Hambantota Port and the extension project of the Southern Expressway  linking Matara to Hambantota. China has been under fire in recent times following allegations it funded the election campaign of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Both China and Rajapaksa have denied the allegations.
