China says its appreciative of Prez's new decision on Hambantota Port

China says its highly appreciative of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's latest decision to abandon plans to re-negotiate the Hambantota Port agreement. Rajapaksa who met Foreign correspondents at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday(19) announced that the Hambanthota Port agreement will not be renegotiated as it was a commercial contract between two governments. The Chinese Embassy said it is willing to guide relevant enterprises to work with the Sri Lankan side to expedite implementing the established agreement and further promote the prosperity and development of Hambantota Port. Few days after his election, President Rajapaksa during an interview with Indian media disclosed that he would renegotiate the Hambantota Port deal with China. Rajapaksa said the deal was a mistake and that majority of the people in the country were unhappy about it.
