The Methodist Church Centre located in Kumbichchankulama, Anuradhapura came under attack on Palm Sunday (14 April), while prayers were conducted for a small group of its Christian members by Fr. Dinuka Silva. Methodist Church Bishop Rev. Asiri P. Perera had travelled from Colombo to attend the service on the same day and was stopped by an angry mob en-route. Rev. Perera after much effort had gained entry to the premises and the group had pelted stones and tossed lit firecrackers to disturb the prayers that were conducted at the time. Later the group was held hostage at the centre and the Bishop had alerted the Police to remove them safely from the premises. While the area Police did not act promptly at the Bishop’s call, it was only after the Bishop made a call to the DIG Crimes Division a unit had been dispatched to rescue the centre members and the reverends from the site. Following the attack, a videoed statement was posted on Rev. Perera’s social media page on 15 April where he described the attack on the centre and pointed out on how ineffective the efforts were as none from the angry mob was taken into custody. On Tuesday during a media briefing Rev. Perera and Fr. Silva shared their experiences and informed that formal complaints had been lodged at the Anuradhapura Police station and at the Colombo Crimes Division over the attacks. Furthermore, another complaint has been lodged with the IGP Pujith Wijesundara over the inaction of the Police following previous attacks and intimidation that took place in 2018, then in February and March leading to the recent attacks. Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunga commenting on the recent attack stated: “We strongly condemn attacks on any religious centres or churches, while we strongly believe in co-existence among religions that are practised in Sri Lanka and it is a fundamental policy that this government follows. As the subject Ministry, we have requested the Police to take stern action against all those perpetrators in order to prevent any further incidents taking place, be it against Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, or whatever religion.” When inquired about the inaction of the area Police on this matter, Amaratunga informed that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had called the Methodist Church Bishop Asiri P. Perera, Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, and all concerned authorities for a meeting on Thursday 18 April, to look in to the complaints that have been lodged and to assess the actions that the Police have taken so far.
