Church asks IGP to probe BBS attack claim

By Buddhika Samaraweera Referring to a recent statement made by the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera that a terror attack such as the Easter Sunday terror attacks of 21 April 2019 could take place at any time in the future, the Catholic Church has requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne that an impartial investigation be carried out into the said statement and that necessary action be taken to prevent such attacks from taking place. During a recent television programme, Ven. Gnanasara Thera had claimed that he had information and evidence that a terrorist attack such as the Easter Sunday bombings could take place at any time. He had also stated that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had been informed of the groups who are to be involved in the said attack and the whereabouts of such groups. Addressing a media briefing held yesterday (16), the National Catholic Social Communication Centre Director and the St. Anne’s Church, Kurana Parish Priest Rev. Father Cyril Gamini Fernando stated that the monk’s statement cannot be underestimated as it is a matter that directly affects the national security and citizens of the country. He also said that he believed this statement, made by a person like Ven. Gnanasara Thera before the media, was made responsibly. “Even though he mentioned that the President has been informed of this, it was not stated as to whether the security agencies, intelligence agencies, the Police, and other relevant agencies and personnel had been informed of this. It was also not stated as to whether the relevant agencies had carried out a proper investigation, whether those responsible had taken the necessary steps to prevent such an attack, and whether any action had been taken against the groups involved,” he added. Fernando further emphasised that the IGP’s responsibility is to conduct an impartial and comprehensive investigation into the matters contained in the statement made by Ven. Gnanasara Thera and to take all necessary steps to prevent such an attack and to arrest those involved. “We request the IGP to pay attention to this statement and to take all necessary steps to prevent such an attack.” Meanwhile, he also commented on a statement made by said monk that he had informed the Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith in 2017 that there was possibility of an attack targeting the Catholic community. Referring to the claim, Fernando denied it, saying that Ven. Gnanasara Thera had never informed the Archbishop of such an attack. “However, at a meeting in 2017, he informed the Archbishop about Muslim expansionism,” he noted. Attempts to contact the Public Security Minister, Rear Admiral (Retd.) Dr. Sarath Weerasekera and the Public Security Ministry Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Jagath Alwis to inquire as to whether they have been informed of a possible terror attack were not successful.
