17 Sep 2018

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa   The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been made to wait until the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne returns from Mexico to decide on a course of action with regard to the allegations against him. Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera told The Sunday Morning that Wijegunaratne is scheduled to return on 19 September. ASP Ruwan Gunasekera stated that the CID would not be able to make a statement on what measures would be taken regarding Wijegunaratne until his return. Sources said that, upon his return, the CID would give Wijegunaratne an alternative date to appear before it in order to make a statement. He was summoned by the CID to give a statement with regard to the abduction of 11 youth in 2008 and 2009. Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered the CID to take necessary action to arrest the former Navy Commander and Chief of Defence Staff on 29 August in the event there is sufficient evidence to prove that he had aided and abetted Navy Officer Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi alias Navy Sampath, to abscond the magisterial inquiry into the disappearance of 11 youth. Navy Sampath was arrested by the CID on Lotus Road in Colombo on 13 August. He had been in hiding, employed as a security guard at an estate, using a fake identity card. Wijegunaratne had informed the CID about his official tour to Mexico but by the time the CID received it, he had left the country.
