CID nabs youth for money laundering

  • Rs. 136 mn sent by murder suspect Dharmasiri Perera 

  A 27-year-old suspect was arrested down Dharmarama Road of Ratmalana on 7 April by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly engaging in money laundering, following the recovery of a massive sum which had been provided to him by murder suspect Dharmasiri Perera.  Perera is a key suspect in connection with the shooting murder of local Government politician Ranjith de Silva, the father of national cricketer Dhananjaya de Silva.  Police Media Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said yesterday (8) that the CID had seized Rs. 136 million from the bank account of the 27-year-old suspect, and that further investigations had revealed that the money had been transferred to him by Perera, who is operating from the United Arab Emirates, in order to commit various acts in Sri Lanka.  DIG Rohana revealed that another suspect had been arrested previously with Rs. 190 million sent from Perera and that CID investigations had revealed that the aforementioned sum of Rs. 136 million had been transferred from that account to the account of the 27-year-old.
