CID submits probe on Deshabandu to AG

21 Jul 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (20) informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court that the extracts related to the investigations carried out on Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Deshabandu Tennakoon regarding the incident of peaceful protestors being attacked by a group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters in Colombo on 9 May, have been forwarded to the Attorney General (AG). The case pertaining to the attack on peaceful protestors at the “MynaGoGama” and “GotaGoGama” protest sites in front of the Temple Trees in Kollupitiya and at the Galle Face Green, respectively, on 9 May, was taken up before Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (20). At that time, the CID informed the Chief Magistrate that it has forwarded the extracts with regard to the investigations carried out on SDIG Tennakoon, regarding the said incidents, to the AG President's Counsel Sanjay Rajaratnam. The case is due to be taken up again on 3 August. A group of SLPP supporters, following a meeting with then-Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had attacked the “MynaGoGama” and “GotaGoGama” protest sites in front of the Temple Trees and at the Galle Face Green on 9 May. Following the attack, tense situations erupted in several parts of the country. Furthermore, allegations have been levelled against the Police, including SDIG Tennakoon, who is in charge of the Western Province, that they had not taken adequate steps to prevent the peaceful protestors from being attacked. Following the attacks, the AG had directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne to initiate disciplinary action against SDIG Tennakoon and to transfer him until the investigations into the said attacks are concluded. Given that the said recommendations have not yet been implemented, Gamage, on an earlier occasion, directed Public Security Ministry Secretary S. Hettiarachchi to explain to the court as to why the recommendations made by the AG with regard to SDIG Tennakoon have not yet been implemented.
