CID to probe phone scam involving Chinese national

By Sarah Hannan The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken over the investigations into a racket involving a Chinese national which was busted last week. Two Sri Lankans and a Chinese national were arrested with high-end mobile phones and computer peripherals on Friday (7) in Negombo during a raid carried out by the Special Task Force (STF) officers. The Police Media Unit said that 402 mobile phones, 17,400 SIM cards, as well as 60 routers issued by various internet and mobile service providers were confiscated from the house in Eththukala. The two locals that were arrested in connection with the incident were residents of Negombo and Kalpitiya. The Chinese national who was arrested was found to have overstayed his visa, preliminary investigations revealed. The Police Media Unit noted that, using these communication devices, the suspects allegedly operated phone scams. They further stated that all handsets were plugged into a power source and were connected to the Wi-Fi network and was placed on a specially designed stand that was complexly networked. Further investigations into the confiscated devices and the arrested individuals are being carried out by the CID, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), and the Telecom Regulatory Commission (TRC) officials.
