CID writes to Kottegoda on Bulathwatte

20 May 2019

The Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Senior DIG Ravi Seneviratne wrote a letter to Defence Secretary General (Retired) Shantha Kottegoda raising concerns over possible interference into the investigations on Major Prabath Bulathwatte after he was reinstated to active service. Major Bulathwatte, a suspect in the abduction of journalist Keith Noyahr in May 2008 and the attack on former Editor of the Rivira newspaper Upali Tennakoon in January 2009, has been restored to active service on the advice of Army Commander Lt. Gen Mahesh Senanayake, a well-informed source told The Sunday Morning. The Army Chief Commander had assured last week that there will not be any interference in the investigations being conducted on Major Bulathwatte. However, the CID raised concerns that the investigations will most likely be influenced as a result of Bulathwatte being reinstated to active service. The Committee to Protect Journalists had also expressed alarm last week over Bulathwatte being reinstated.
