Cinema industry exempted from entertainment tax for two years

The approval has been granted to exempt the cinema industry from the entertainment tax for the two years of 2021 and 2022, the Prime Minister's Office said. It said the decision was taken by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa following a request made by the cinema industry representatives. The Secretary to the Ministry of Public Service, Provincial Councils and Local Government, J. J. Ratnasiri, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Prof. Kapila Gunawardena, have given their approval to the decision today. Accordingly, for the period of 2021-2022, the cinema industry will be exempted from the entertainment tax. The approval was also granted to reduce the entertainment tax on the cinema industry to 7.5 percent from 2023.
