President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that measures are being taken to set up a citizen-centric digital government for the convenience of Sri Lanka’s citizens.
“Establishing citizen service centres to adopt new technologies for public service delivery, introducing a digital and electronic payment system to pay traffic fines, and establishing an e-procurement system to eliminate bribery and corruption, among others, are envisaged under this component. Very soon, a unique digital identity card with the state-of-the-art technology for every citizen will be a reality.
The President made these comments addressing Sri Lanka Internet Day 2021 held virtually on 6 and 7 April.
Stressing on the fact that a technology-based society pillar cannot be overlooked, the President stated that citizen service centres will soon adopt new technology for public service delivery.
President Rajapaksa then remarked that substantial work has been done with regard to the introduction of a unique digital identity card with state-of-the-art technology, which will soon be available for every citizen.
He also highlighted how the country will benefit from a system of e-governance.
“A well-implemented e-governance framework will not only ensure the wellbeing of the people in their day-to-day activities, but will also make the government work efficiently and effectively. This will drastically reduce corruption in transactions,” he said.
Accordingly, harnessing the power of Sri Lanka’s internet connectivity will result in an efficient e-governance programme which will in turn save the time of the public when they need to get essential tasks done via the government, he added.
