The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said yesterday (28) that investigations are being carried out to determine the cause of the two emergency landings made by two aircrafts attached to Sakurai Aviation Ltd. over the past two weeks.
“We have commenced investigations as we want to find out the specific reasons for the two emergency landings that occurred this month,” a CAA official told The Morning yesterday.
On Monday (27), the 4R – GAF Cessna 172 aircraft made an emergency landing on a paddy field in Kimbulapitiya. Sri Lanka Air Force Spokesman Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe told the media that the four passengers on board the aircraft, which included the two pilots, were hospitalised as they had sustained injuries during the landing. On 22 December, the 4R – ASJ Piper PA 38 aircraft made a similar emergency landing on the Payagala beach, although there were no reported injuries.
Following the incident on Monday, CAA Director General Capt. Themiya Abeywickrama has reportedly written to Sakura Aviation Ltd., ordering it to suspend its entire operations until further notice, as per the powers vested under Section 38 of the CAA Act No. 14 of 2010.
The Civil Aircraft Registry available on the CAA website, seen by The Morning, includes the 4R – ASJ Piper PA 38 aircraft. However, it does not include the 4R – GAF Cessna 172 aircraft. When The Morning inquired about this from the CAA, officials noted that this is because the document on the website was last updated in February of this year.
“However, both aircrafts are registered – the ‘4R’ on the name indicates their registration,” they assured.
The Morning’s attempts to contact Sakura Aviation Ltd. yesterday proved futile.
