Civil society to raise concerns at UNHRC

11 Feb 2021

Present HR situ under critique By Pamodi Waravita   A collective of civil society organisations will be writing to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland regarding alleged human rights violations that are currently taking place in the country, The Morning learnt. “We will be writing to the council with our criticisms of the current situation in the country,” Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) Executive Director Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu told The Morning yesterday (10). The UNHRC would meet in Geneva for its 46th Session from 22 February to 23 March where Sri Lanka’s impunity with regard to alleged human rights violations would be discussed and debated upon. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet’s report on Sri Lanka is due to be presented on the second day of the session. The report was already shared with the Government of Sri Lanka, to which they replied pointing out the factual inaccuracies and misconceptions of it. The report detailed both past and present human rights violations, including recent minority- related concerns around the forced cremation of Covid-19 victims. It was reported that the Core Group on Sri Lanka, led by the UK, has confirmed that they would be submitting a resolution on the country. However, the question remains as to whether the Government would agree to a consensual resolution.
