Dr. Perera shared that they received four bodies from the incident. Whilst the situation within the Mahara Prison was still in an unknown status, State Minister of Prison Reforms and Prisoners’ Rehabilitation Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle had instructed the Secretary to appoint a committee to conduct a full investigation over the incident. “Reports of unrest from the Mahara Prions were reported in the evening and we reached out to the Ragama and Kelaniya Police to deploy additional units for protection and situation control in the premises and the outer perimeters. Amid their attempt to control the situation, the units had to discharge their firearms. One death and five injuries of inmates were reported so far,” Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya told The Morning early last evening. Meanwhile Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana, also speaking to The Morning earlier in the evening, stated: “We sent four police teams headed by the SSP of Kelaniya and OIC of Ragama to control the situation, and teams of Special Task Force (STF) personnel to provide security for the outer perimeter of the prison.” The Police Media Unit issued the statement about the tense situation in the Mahara Prison at about 6 p.m. yesterday, and noted that a team from the Police STF unit was deployed to bring the situation under control. Just 20 minutes into the Police Media statement, the Prions Department reported the casualties. The state of the facilities at the Mahara Prison Hospital came to light following the death of a 45-year-old Pakistani prisoner who had fallen ill due to kidney complications. It is reported that this prisoner was sent to the Mahara Prison from the Welikada Prison Hospital on 10 November and was kept at the Mahara Prison Hospital until he was admitted to the Ragama Hospital on Saturday (28), after which he succumbed due to kidney failure. Another notable inmate in custody at the Mahara Prison was former Criminal Investigation Director (CID) Director Shani Abeysekara, who was transferred to the Welikada Prison claiming he had contracted Covid-19. On 26 November, he was transferred to the Gallella Quarantine Centre in Polonnaruwa, which lacks adequate medical facilities. He was later transferred to IDH on Friday (27) due to complicated health conditions.
