Clauses in Port City Bill inconsistent with Constitution: SC

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has ruled that some specific clauses in the Port City Economic Commission Bill are inconsistent with the Constitution. Accordingly, it has been stated that these inconsistent clauses can be made valid if amended or passed through a referendum. This information was revealed when the Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena read the Supreme Court’s determination on the Bill today (18) in Parliament.  In its determination, the Supreme Court stated that the rest of the clauses of the Bill have been examined and they have been found to be consistent with the Constitution.  The Supreme Court also determined that upon the amendments suggested by the Court being effected, the Bill and its provisions will cease to be inconsistent with the Constitution. Additionally, the Court placed on record their deep appreciation of the assistance given by all learned Counsel for the Petitioners and Intervenient Petitioners and the learned Additional Solicitor General.   Listed below are the inconsistent clauses:
