10 Nov 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga said that 9,545 tourists have arrived in the country from 1 to 7 November. The highest number of tourists that arrived in the country was from India, according to the Minister. He pointed out that with the reopening of the country to tourists, the number of tourists visiting the country is gradually picking up. “This confirms that the tourism industry in Sri Lanka is recovering; if it is possible to maintain the country without any travel restrictions again, we are confident that the tourism industry will be able to make a significant contribution to the recovery of the country by the end of next year,” he said. Meanwhile, Minister Ranatunga also noted that special tourism promotion programmes are planned to be implemented in the UK, Germany, France, and India during the forthcoming major tourist season. The UK, Germany, and France are Sri Lanka’s traditional major European source markets. India is the main source market in the Asian region. Accordingly, global television channels, public relations in France, social media campaigns in the Middle East, and strategic tourism and marketing promotions in the UK, Germany, and India are expected to be covered. With the success of the national vaccination programme and the easing of health regulations, this will promote Sri Lanka as a high-value destination globally. Ranatunga further said that direct flights with these countries are also planned to be expanded during the forthcoming major tourist season, on which the national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, is already working.
