  • Thiromi Gamage on her skincare brand Coffee BeanBody
Coffee BeanBody Founder Thiromi Gamage spent most of her life in Bangladesh. She completed her Bachelors in Singapore when she was 19 and moved back to work with her dad in Bangladesh for a short while. And for the last 12 years, she’s worked in multiple industries in Singapore, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, gaining knowledge in different fields but one thing that was always true to her was that she wanted to be in a creative space. Thus, her skincare brand, Coffee BeanBody was founded.  [caption id="attachment_165947" align="alignright" width="290"] Coffee BeanBody Founder Thiromi Gamage[/caption] Brunch had a chat with her about her products and brand. Here’s what she had to say.  How long have you been making your products for and how did you get started?  I started this brand two years ago with the intention of creating a skincare brand that is affordable to everyone who wants good skincare with quality ingredients. The brand, honestly, was born because I was someone who couldn’t use a lot of skincare products because I was highly sensitive to a lot of products. So experimenting with making at home brought about simple products like scrubs. Now we have evolved into many other different products.  What interested you in the art of making skincare?  Creating was something I just loved to do. Whether it be baking, cooking, crafts, anything. When friends and family tried my scrubs, I was interested in making it a business. The endless possibilities of products that we can make also inspired me.  Why is coffee a good ingredient in skincare products?  Coffee has an endless list of benefits. It not only nourishes from the outside making skin feel smooth and brighter but deep within, it helps blood circulation, turnover of cells, improves the health within. It also helps with acne, breakouts, removes dead skin cells, over a long period of time even helps reduce cellulite and stretch marks. It’s a really versatile ingredient.  What would you say are the benefits of using homemade skincare products?  Small brands like ours always try to keep the customer as happy as possible. We always do the best we can in assisting our customers with their requirements in mind. If a product is not needed for them, we don’t try to sell it just because. Keeping their skin healthy and safe is the most important for us. And I think we try to use quality ingredients in everything we do, that’s another benefit. Knowing that these are products we would not hesitate to recommend to our family, we can confidently recommend it to others as well.  What has been the most surprising thing about running your own beauty company?  One of the surprises was the sheer number of aspects we need to look into in building this brand up. Customers only JUST see an Instagram page or Facebook page or just the website, but what goes on behind is just mayhem sometimes. From product development, to testing, to packaging to production, it’s difficult sometimes to keep up, especially being a small brand.  All your products are handmade, how do you do that and what’s the process of making it?  Like I mentioned earlier, it can get chaotic sometimes. Sometimes when we test, it may take months. We go through batches of trying to get a product right. And yet somehow, during production, because it’s handmade, inconsistencies can happen. And that is something we always try to perfect.  For people who don’t know what kind of range do you offer; can you tell us a bit about your product range?  We currently have 10 products – a combination of the Original Collection (a range that we started with that are face scrubs and body scrubs) and the Tropical Collection which was recently launched with clay masques, body oils, and body packs.  Which is your personal favourite product from your range?  Personally it would be the Radiate Clay Masque and Satin Body Oil. I have eczema so the oil really helps tone it down sometimes.  Do you have anything new coming up?  Definitely! We are always trying to come up with new products! Sometime before Black Friday we will be releasing a bunch of stuff like moisturisers, eye masks, and body butters.  Instagram: coffeebeanbody
