28 Jul 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Government is carrying out a beautification project of Colombo at a cost of Rs. 60 million, The Morning learnt. Urban Development Authority (UDA) Director General N.P.K. Ranaweera told The Morning that he expects costs to be lower. “Rs. 60 million has been allocated, but we expect it would not cost that much. We are using our own workforce and machinery and have not given out any contracts. It is completely in-house so as to cut costs,” he said. He said the beautification project was being carried out near the Galle Face Green area. “The project seeks to beautify the areas around the Taj Samudra and Shangri-La hotels. It has been going on since just after the pandemic broke out.” Ranaweera said they expect the project to be concluded by October this year.
