Colombo Port City workers suspend protest : Govt. intervention sought

14 Aug 2020

The Colombo Port City employees who had temporarily suspended the protest launched recently were waiting for a government decision, The Morning learnt. They claimed that the local employees were not allowed to enter the project site while the Chinese employees were currently continuing to work on the project. However, the project has been temporarily suspended by the workers following written permission given by a top official of the Port City. However, the management has stated that the protest was launched by a group of employees who had been working with a contractor and whose contract period was over. Furthermore, they were given the assurance that the job security of over 1,500 locals working at the Port City would be upheld. The protestors alleged that the management had restricted the local employees and they had complained to the Commissioner of Labour too, and had not received a good response from them. The group urged the Government to intervene and give them a proper solution.  (MM)
