The confidential genome sequencing report tracing the new strain of Covid-19 has been handed over to the Ministry of Health by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJP) laboratory which is carrying out Covid-19 diagnostics, The Morning learnt.
In response to a query by The Morning yesterday (12) regarding rumours about the identification of a new Covid-19 strain from Sri Lanka, USJP Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit Director Dr. Chandima Jeewandara said that the confidential reports of the genome sequencing done on the samples that were sent to them have been handed over to Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena.
The USJP Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit is the only laboratory in the island that can conduct genome sequencing which is the test to identify new strains of the Covid-19 virus.
Although Dr. Jeewandara confirmed that the USJP had received samples of a passenger from a flight from the UK, he could not comment on whether the new strain has been identified as the report is confidential.
When contacted, National Operation Centre for the Prevention of Covid-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) Gen. Shavendra Silva said that they had received no confirmation regarding a new strain.
Numerous attempts to contact Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena regarding this matter proved futile.
