The governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and its key coalition partner, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), have been engaged in disagreements at different levels.
Despite the disagreements, the SLFP parliamentary group has tried to work out the issues in order to prevent cracks in the alliance.
However, with some SLFP members, including party General Secretary State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, openly criticising the Government and its actions, senior SLPP leaders are now growing suspicious of their alliance partner.
This was evident last Sunday (18) when the SLPP parliamentary group was invited to dinner after the group meeting presided by the President.
Senior SLPP Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, seeing senior SLFP Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and SLFP National Organiser State Minister Duminda Dissanayake engaged in a conversation, had pointed to them and shouted asking in jest. “Are you hatching a conspiracy?” Everyone had turned towards the two SLFP ministers and laughed. Both de Silva and Dissanayake have also laughed and made their way to a group of SLPP MPs and engaged in a light-hearted conversation.
