Constitutional Council: A routine meeting

24 Apr 2020

The Constitutional Council (CC) chaired by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya met yesterday (23) at his official residence in Colombo. All members of the council, except Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala who resides in Kandy, had participated at the meeting. However, The Morning learnt that the CC had not discussed any major issues such as the impending constitutional crisis or the election. A member of the council, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Morning that the CC meeting was a routine meeting and nothing special had been discussed. When asked whether the Council discussed any pending appointments, the CC member said that several appointments had been tabled but were not discussed at the meeting. “Only the issue regarding police transfers had been raised and the members agreed to refer the matter to the Election Commission (EC) as during an election, such appointments couldn’t be made without the EC’s approval,” he added. Asked whether any discussion regarding reconvening Parliament had taken place, the CC member stressed that it was not in the agenda. However, the participants had shared their opinions in their personal capacity after the meeting, which was in no way related to the council meeting. The CC is mandated to meet twice a month and even after the dissolution of the former Parliament, the Council has to keep meeting until the next CC is officially sanctioned by the new Parliament. – Maheesha Mudugamuwa
