Cop on cop shooting motive unconfirmed

27 Dec 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera It has not yet been confirmed that the reason behind shooting incident where a Police Sergeant killed four of his colleagues and wounded three at the Thirukkovil Police Station in Ampara on 24 December was due to a leave-related issue, Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nihal Thalduwa said. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (27), he also said that there is no need to amend the method of granting leave to police officers, as it has not been confirmed that the cause of the said incident was a leave-related issue. “The police officer in question had taken leave last month as well. He has not applied for leave since then and the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) has not said that he could not be granted leave. Whatever the police officer says now, we do not see that this incident was caused by a leave-related issue,” he said. When inquired about the leave entitlement of a police officer, SSP Thalduwa said that a police officer is entitled to more than 60 days of leave annually, which fall into the categories of leave which are hospital leave and vacation leave. In addition, he said that if a police officer works on public holidays, including on Poya, they can take the relevant day off on another day. “Overall, police officers are less likely to take leave. We do not get leave on Saturdays and Sundays like at other institutions. For example, police officers cannot be granted leave during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year and on Vesak Poya Day,” he added. However, SSP Thalduwa said that not being able to get leave as and when one wants is a problem for all police officers, from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) downwards, reiterating, however, that there was no sufficient evidence to prove that the Thirukkovil incident was caused by a leave-related issue. A Police Sergeant attached to the Thirukkovil Police Station had carried out the shooting on 24 December. The shooting killed four police officers including one Police Sergeant, two Police Constables (PCs), and a PC driver, who were posthumously promoted to the next rank. The OIC of the police station was among the wounded police officers subsequently hospitalised. Between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on 24 December, the Police Sergeant in question had arrived at the police station and grabbed the service firearm of the police officer who was on duty at the main entrance at the police station. The suspect had then opened fire using that firearm, targeting his fellow police officers inside the station. The Thirukkovil OIC, who had been out of the station due to an official duty, had then arrived at the police station in his police jeep at that moment, while the suspect had then opened fire on that vehicle too. Three police officers were killed on the spot, while another had succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the hospital. The Police stated that the three wounded police officers including the OIC of the police station are undergoing treatment at the Thirukkovil and Akkaraipattu Hospitals. Later, the suspect turned himself in, along with two Type-56 assault rifles and 19 rounds of ammunition at a different police station. He reportedly drove to his village in his private vehicle and surrendered to the Ethimale Police Station.
