COP26 begins with President representing Sri Lanka

The highly anticipated 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) began yesterday (31 October) in Glasgow, Scotland with delegates from around 200 countries, and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa representing Sri Lanka. The delegates are there to announce how they will cut emissions by 2030 and help the planet. With the world warming because of fossil fuel emissions caused by humans, scientists warn that urgent action is needed to avoid a climate catastrophe. President Rajapaksa arrived in Glasgow, Scotland to attend COP26 on 30 October and was welcomed by Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the UK Saroja Sirisena. Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera, State Minister of Solar, Wind, and Hydro Power Generation Projects Development Duminda Dissanayake, Principal Advisor to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Foreign Secretary Admiral (Prof.) Jayanath Colombage, and Ministry of Environment Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe accompanied the President. The conference will be held till 12 November to discuss climate change and to talk over how countries implement their strategies to tackle the climate crisis. Today (1) and tomorrow (2) are set aside for the World Leaders’ Summit. The COP26 – the UN Climate Change Conference – is a critical moment in the fight against climate change and the conference will be attended by around 25,000 people representing a wide range of fields, including Heads of State, government representatives, scholars, and businessmen from 197 countries.
