COPE instructs to expedite mapping of high risk landslide prone areas

26 Feb 2021

The COPE (Committee on Public Enterprises) has noted that the mapping programme to identify high risk landslide prone areas in the Kandy District should be expedited. The COPE noted that the Thumpane, Minipe, Ududumbara and Hataraliyadda areas had not yet been mapped as of December 31. COPE Chairman Prof. Charitha Herath pointed out that the amendment of the Disaster Management Act is a very important step towards streamlining the disaster management process. The COPE Chairman said that the recommendations of the COPE could be used for any legal purpose as an opinion of Parliament. He expressed these views while speaking at a COPE meeting held to review the performance of the project to resettle families living in landslide prone areas in the Kandy District of the Central Province. It was revealed that the mapping will take into account the number of recent landslides in the Kandy District, the number of buildings in the area and the nature of the development taking place in the area. Area mapping identifies landslide high risk zones and then categorizes geospatial areas into high risk, medium risk and low risk areas.
