Corruption and abuse at an orphanage

27 Apr 2019

Allegations have been levelled against the management of a children’s home located in the Poojapitiya Police Division in Kandy, indicating possible corruption, abuse, and violence against the orphans and the founder of the orphanage who are held hostage at the premises at present. An online petition is in circulation on social media which urges the public to save the children’s home from the alleged violators and has requested the removal of its present CEO and board member and Director of Human Rights from the organisation. As listed in the petition, the duo had allegedly misappropriated funds that were allocated for the welfare of the orphans and indicated that due to the lack of funding, the orphanage was to be shut down. Furthermore, the petition indicated that the present Director of Human Rights and the CEO were in fact involved in violating the rights of children who were in care, sexually harassing its staff, siphoning off unutilised funds to purchase real estate, brand new vehicles, and keeping the founder under house arrest and mistreating him, to name a few. When contacted by The Sunday Morning, the Poojapitiya Police acting OIC stated that he was unable to provide information over the phone. Several attempts were made to contact the children’s home, however the calls were unanswered on each occasion.
