Court gives conditional go-ahead for CID to probe journalist

21 Jul 2020

The Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today (21) told the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch an investigation on journalist Dharisha Bastians if she had tried to obstruct their probe into the alleged Swiss Embassy abduction case. The Chief Magistrate pointed this out following a clarification made by Bastians's Lawyer with regard to the date on which her laptop was seized by the CID. When the Swiss Embassy abduction case was taken up today, Bastians's Lawyer Shiraz Noordeen said the laptop was taken on June 10th and not June 4th as stated before. Noordeen expressed regret about the miscommunication regarding the date of seizure. However,  CID ASP Merril Ranjan Lamahewa appearing in court objected to this clarification noting that the journalist had "obstructed the CID probe from the beginning. The Chief Magistrate, however,  said that the court was satisfied with the lawyers explanation over the  mix-up over the dates. The case in which Swiss Embassy staffer Garnier Barrister Francis is a suspect for making a false complaint was then postponed till September 8th.
