Court issues enjoining order preventing CEBEU from halting electricity supply

09 Jun 2022

The District Court of Colombo has issued an enjoining order preventing the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union (CEBEU), its office bearers and its members from preventing supply of electricity to the general public as a result of engaging in any strike or trade union action. This comes after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa issued a Gazette Extraordinary declaring the supply of electricity as an essential service effective from yesterday (June 08). The CEBEU’s strike action demands the following: To withdraw the proposed amendments to the Electricity Act, No. 20 of 2009 with immediate effect; to stop the handing over of the country’s wind and solar resources to the Adani Group (paying in US dollars) without following the competitive bidding process; to stop driving the CEB towards privatisation under the guise of reform; and to appoint a suitable professional with unblemished character to the post of CEB Chairman without further delay. Earlier today, the Union had collectively decided to continue with the strike without total interruption of electricity supply. “It was decided to continue the strike while preventing a total power failure in the system until the demands are materialised, in honouring HE the president’s assurance that he would make sure the proposed amendments to the Act by CEB would be included,” the CEBEU stated. Earlier, it was decided to call off the strike completely, whereas the decision was changed this morning.
