Court of Appeal to take up Gota's citizenship petition on 2 Oct

30 Sep 2019

The Appeal Court will take up the petition filed against SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapakse's Sri Lankan citizenship on 2 Oct, Petitioner Gamini Viyangoda said. A petition was filed before the Court of Appeal by two civil society activists Gamini Viyangoda and Prof. Chandraguptha Thenuwara requesting not to recognize former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa as a Sri Lankan citizen. The petition also requests the Court of Appeal to deliver the relevant order to the Minister of Internal & Home Affairs and Provincial Councils & Local Government Vajira Abeywardena. Rajapaksa has been accused of violating the Citizenship Act, the Immigrants and Emigrants Act, and the Elections Act by engaging in political activities back during the 2005 presidential election while holding US citizenship.
