Court orders Acting IGP to take action against those transporting sand without permits

The Appeal Court has ordered Acting IGP C. D. Wickramaratne to take legal action against those transporting sand & rubble without permits. A case was filed by the Center of Environmental Justice with the Court of Appeal seeking an order to suspend a cabinet decision taken on the 4th of December last year to abolish the permit system. However, when the case was taken up today, Additional Solicitor General Parinda Ranasinghe PC, representing the Attorney General in Court pointed out that it is mandatory for sand and rubble to be transported with a valid license under the provisions of the Mines and Minerals Act, No. 33 of. 1992. The Act. IGP was thereby ordered by the Appeal Court to arrest anyone who transported sand & rubble without a license.
