Court rejects Police request to ban IUSF’s Parliament protest

  • IUSF and others to protest today, tomorrow
BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court yesterday (4) rejected the request made by the Thalangama Police seeking an order preventing protests from being held near Parliament today (5) and tomorrow (6). A protest is planned to be held near Parliament today and tomorrow, with the participation of several parties, including the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF). Accordingly, the Thalangama Police had requested an order from the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, preventing the protests from being held in the area. However, Attorney-at-Law Kamal Wijesiri told the media that the said request has been rejected on the grounds that the submissions made by the Police in this regard were insufficient and unsatisfactory. He also said that all requests made by the Police on behalf of the Government to prevent the series of protests to be staged by the IUSF and several other parties near the Parliament have been rejected. A total of 13 persons who were staging a protest in front of the entrance road to the Parliament were arrested by the Police yesterday (4) afternoon. Nearly 20 protestors were engaged in a protest at the entrance to the Parliament, carrying placards reading “sign the no-confidence motion”. The protestors were seen opposing the police officers, alleging that the police officers were taking their photographs. Shortly afterwards, a bus carrying a large number of police officers arrived at the scene. A heated situation arose when the Police tried to arrest the protestors and video footage of the incident showed several protestors being forcibly loaded into the bus by the police officers. When contacted by The Morning, the Police Media Division stated that a total of 13 protestors have been arrested for allegedly blocking the entrance road to the Parliament and the vehicles plying on the said road. According to the Police Media Division, the arrestees were being held at the Maharagama Police Station and were then produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate.
