03 Sep 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The judiciary would have to decide the fate of convicted felon MP Premalal Jayasekara on whether he can attend Parliament. Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told The Morning that it would be decided by the courts. “There is a court case currently ongoing with regard to this matter. It is up to the courts and Parliament has no hand in the matter.” Meanwhile, Deputy General Secretary and Chief of Staff of Parliament Neil Iddawela too said that Parliament had played its role.  “The Parliamentary Secretariat has already written to the relevant authority – the Prisons Department – notifying them that Jayasekara has been gazetted as an MP and that he has been invited to attend Parliament. The Parliament has done its duty.  Now, it is a matter of the courts deciding whether he can be released or not,” he explained. The Election Commission (EC) too said the matter was out of their hands. “We have done our part and held the election and gazetted the new Parliament. The rest of this issue is up to the courts and Parliament,” EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya told The Morning.
