Covid-19: Extremely difficult to prove community transmission exists says DDGHS

02 Feb 2022

Health authorities are facing extreme difficulty in proving that community transmission of Covid-19 exists in the country, according to Deputy Director General of Health Services (DDGHS) Dr. Hemantha Herath. “Scientifically, it is extremely difficult to prove that community transmission is taking place because the cluster transmission cannot be established due to the large number of people who are asymptomatic or showing mild symptoms,” he told the media yesterday (01). Dr. Herath also expressed that it is challenging to link each new case to a previous case. “It is not possible to scientifically exclude cluster transmission, however we know that a large number of cases are emerging from the community,” the DDGHS said. He also expressed that instead of arguing about whether community transmission exists, it is important to adhere to health guidelines and ensure that people are not contributing to the spread of the disease.
