The Department of Prisons stated that it has taken prompt measures to transfer the inmates and staff that came into close contact with the two inmates who tested positive for Covid-19 last week.
“There is no immediate threat of a potential cluster being activated within the Welikada Prison as we promptly followed the health guidelines and arrested the situation. From the 100 PCR tests that were carried out on the close contacts and staff, only two Covid-19-positive cases have been recorded so far,” Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya said.
In order to maintain physical distancing among the inmates of Welikada Prison following the detection of two Covid-19-positive cases, Upuldeniya informed The Morning that the close contacts and the staff handling the inmates were immediately transferred to the Punani Quarantine Centre, where they are presently being monitored.
When asked about whether the segregation of prisoners as new and old was not a new practice, the Commissioner General noted: “When a suspect is imprisoned, they will be held in remand prison for the first 21 days and based on their sentence, they are moved to a different ward. It is applicable to all prison institutions functioning in the country.”
He reiterated that the practice is general protocol and has not changed.
