By Sarah Hannan The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) is to propose the initiation of “Covid-19 Safety Buses” from next week onwards, after 20 out of the 500 bus drivers and conductors tested positive for Covid-19 from the Western Province during the ongoing second wave of the virus. Speaking to The Morning, LPBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said: “We are looking at presenting a proposal to the Minister of Transport about the Covid-19 Safety Bus programme, where we will operate selected buses which will carry a sticker indicating that it is a Covid-19 Safety Bus. We are also looking at getting our bus staff health insurance with the assistance of the Ministry. ” Accordingly, the conductor will have a dedicated seat at the front entrance of the bus, a hand sanitiser bottle will be attached at the entry point of the bus, and disposable seat covers will be issued to passengers when boarding the bus, whilst buses will only take passengers to half-capacity. He also added that safety instructions will be clearly displayed at the front of the bus. With persons who suffer from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) facing significant risk of complications if they contract the virus, Wijeratne added: “We are facing a crisis at this moment as we are unable to operate most of our buses, with drivers and conductors not reporting to work. Many of them suffer from non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, and their families are not letting them drive the buses as they do not want their husbands, fathers, and sons to contract the virus.” Wijeratne said that it is the responsibility of the Road Passenger Transport Authority to ensure that random PCR testing is conducted at all bus terminals regardless of whether they drive a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus or a private bus. Road Passenger Transport Authority – Western Province Chairman O.W. Prasanna Sanjeewa recently revealed that at least 20 out of the 500 drivers, conductors, and timekeepers who underwent PCR testing at several bus terminals within the Western Province from October up to date had tested positive for Covid-19. So far, samples have been collected at the Gunasinghepura, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Horana, Kottawa, Homagama, Panadura, Kalutara, and Matugama bus stands. Further sample collections are to be carried out in other bus terminals in the coming weeks as well. Sanjeewa noted that at least 10,000 people are employed in the passenger transport service within the Western Province operating approximately 4,900 buses on a day-to-day basis.
