Covid-19: Shattering the stigma

09 Dec 2020

The State Ministry of Primary Health Services, Pandemics, and Covid Prevention is to look at a strategic approach in shattering the stigma that has been created around Covid-19, it is learnt. Addressing a recent analytical meeting that was held at the Ministry yesterday (8), State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle stressed on the importance of improving awareness about Covid-19 through traditional and new media platforms. “There is an undue fear among the people about Covid-19 and that infected people are trying to hide it, which has caused problems in the controlling Covid-19. We need to urge the public to get tested and then to go and get treated at the healthcare institutions that are designated Covid-19 treatment centres, if they get tested positive for Covid-19.” She also stressed the need for the public to be made aware of the situation as there is a tendency for society to look down on the infected people and reject them. Focusing on increasing the capacity of daily PCR testing, the State Minister also inquired about the difficulties that existed when running diagnostics and collecting necessary samples. The shortage of ambulances in areas where Covid-19-infected patients are reported was also highlighted and the possibility of using ambulances in areas where patients are not reported was to be considered. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa too had instructed that the cremation of those who died due to the Covid-19 disease be carried out at the expense of the Government, should families find it financially cumbersome to carry out the final rites as per government and healthcare regulations. Discussions were also focused on the intervention of the Ministry of Health in controlling the spread of Covid-19 in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) area, and how the healthcare authorities should act when dealing with Covid-19 clusters that would be generated in future. Dr. Fernandopulle also noted that the health guidelines that are in practice should be reiterated to the public in the upcoming festive season and urged the public to not be complacent, as there are still hundreds of patients that are getting reported to have contracted Covid-19 from several areas of the country.
