Covid-19 single-shot vaccines: No interest by manufacturers says NMRA

07 Mar 2021

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) says it has not yet received any expression of interest by the agents of the American-made Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) single-dose vaccine for Covid-19. Although there were speculations that the Ministry of Health was considering including the J&J single-shot vaccine in the approved list of vaccines for the vaccination programme, which was recently approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scientists of the US, the vaccine is yet to be registered at the NMRA. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, NMRA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Kamal Jayasinghe said: “We made an open call for suppliers to register their vaccines for the purpose of preventing Covid-19 and boosting immunity against it. It was only in the third week of February that the J&J single-shot vaccine got the US regulator’s nod to supply vaccine doses to the public. The NMRA, however, has not received any request or the necessary papers from them to register the vaccine.”
