Covid-19 : Special op to arrest bogus beggars

16 Nov 2020

A special operation has been launched to arrest bogus beggars who obstruct vehicular movement at traffic lights, especially due to Covid-19 concerns, Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said. He said many people have raised a concern that the beggars at traffic lights could contribute to the spread of the virus. “It has been revealed that many of the beggars are not genuine as they are collecting money on behalf of an employer as a business,” DIG Rohana said. He said that the identified genuine beggars would be directed to rehabilitation centres with the assistance of the Social Welfare Department. “Bogus beggars will be arrested and legal action will be taken against them,” he said.
