Covid-19: Strict health regulations for Sri Pada season

The state-sponsored Sri Pada pilgrimage season is scheduled to commence from 27 December following strict health guidelines stipulated by the Ministry of Health, Governors of the Central Province and the Sabaragamuwa Province stated. "Arrangements have been made to hold this year's Siripa pilgrimage, allowing a limited number of devotees who will have the opportunity take part and perform the religious rites and complete the pilgrimage as per the instructions given by the healthcare services and security forces," Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage told The Morning Accordingly, it was agreed that the maximum number of people on the first day of the Sri Pada season, which begins on the full moon day of Uduwap, will be limited to 200 (50 people per route).  It is compulsory that the pilgrims obtain a certificate of registration from their respective divisional secretariat approving their participation. The procession is not allowed to stop at any place; offerings too should not be made on the way; only a few vehicles will be allowed to participate in the perahera, and all food and beverage dansals will be banned. However, the distribution of masks and hand washing facilities can be offered to the devotees by interested parties. Under strict health regulations, few shops will be permitted at the Sri Padasthanaya. Employees of these shops will be subjected to regular PCR inspections and health screening by the Medical Officer of Health and public health inspectors (PHIs). The annual procession of the statue and relics of the local deity Saman will take place on the evening of 27 December, which is to be deposited in a special room at the Sri Pada Rajamaha Viharaya, and will be later taken by the procession that would leave from Sri Pada Rajamaha Viharaya to Sri Padasthanaya on the morning of 28 December through four routes. Accordingly, the procession will travel along the Sri Palabaddala Road, Balangoda Road, Kuruwita Road, and Hatton Nallathanni Road. Security and healthcare services teams are to be deployed on all four roads for scrutiny.  Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage and Sabaragamuwa Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa presided the special discussion on the Sri Pada pilgrimage, which is scheduled to commence on the upcoming Uduwap ​​Full Moon Poya Day under the patronage of Gautama Sri Padasthanadhipati Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Nayaka Thera.
