Covid-19 threat not over for SL: Army Chief

02 Sep 2020

Despite a visible relaxation of health guidelines imposed to combat the spread of Covid-19 in Sri Lanka, the threat of the virus entering the society is very real, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and Head of the Covid-19 Prevention Task Force, Lt. General Shavendra Silva said. The Army Chief told The Morning that the increasing number of Covid-19 positive patients among the Sri Lankans repatriated to the country is indicative of the risk of the virus entering society if health guidelines are not followed. "People have forgotten about Covid-19 and are behaving like it never happened. The truth is that the virus is still affecting people and very much there," Silva said. "We are repatriating stranded Sri Lankans because they have a right to return to their country, but the number of infected persons are increasing among them," he added. The Army Chief explained that when infected persons arrive in the country, there are many persons exposed locally. "Therefore, failing to follow health guidelines is very important," Silva observed.
