Covid-19 treatment: Ayurvedic medicines under review

27 Dec 2020

A total of 37 ayurvedic supplementary medicines are recommended for research after which they would be issued for clinical trials before they are recommended to the general public, State Minister for Indigenous Medicine Promotion, Rural and Ayurvedic Hospitals Development, and Community Health informed.  State Minister Sisira Jayakody, speaking to The Sunday Morning, said: “At the moment, there are about 37 ayurvedic supplementary medicines that have currently been recommended to be researched and trialled. So far, we have been able to introduce an immunity booster drink, a preparation that is to be used for steam inhalation, and a mouthwash under the Suwa Dharani brand, which was produced specifically for Covid-19 treatments.”  The State Minister also confirmed that once the ayurvedic medications are approved by the research teams, they are trialled through the tri-forces and are then given to persons that are in government quarantine facilities.  In addition to that, the State Ministry has sought assistance from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura to test an ayurvedic tonic on its effectiveness against the virus.  Earlier last week, National Research Council Chairman Prof. Senani Hemantha Dodampahala too had confirmed that two of the ayurvedic medications were under study.  However, both institutions denied that the recently popularised curative tonic, which the public flocked to obtain, was not included in these trials and studies.
