Although the symptoms of Covid-19 Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant are not very severe, health experts have pointed out that it is important for those with chronic diseases and other complications to seek medical attention as soon as they become infected with the virus.
Speaking to the media yesterday (20), Head of the Health Ministry’s integrated home-based care programme for asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic Covid-19 patients and Consultant Family Physician Dr. Malkanthi Galhena said: “Because the symptoms of the Covid-19 Omicron variant are not very severe, even patients with chronic diseases and other complications are reported to be staying at home after being infected with Covid-19. It is a very dangerous condition."
She, therefore, emphasised that people with chronic diseases and other complications, as well as those who have not received the booster third dose of the US and Germany-manufactured Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, should seek medical attention as soon as possible as the infection of Covid-19 is more likely to cause serious complications to such.
“Although the symptoms could be mild, the infection of the Covid-19 Omicron variant to those with chronic diseases and other complications may lead to serious complications and even their lives could be at risk. Therefore, it is essential that such persons see a doctor as soon as they develop Covid-19 symptoms,” she said.
Noting that several members of most families have now been infected with Covid-19, she said that many people, however, stay home without seeking medical treatment because their symptoms are not so severe.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, as of 10 a.m. yesterday, Sri Lanka had recorded 15,969 Covid-19 deaths, while the total number of infections stood at 635,606, of which a total of 597,118 patients had recovered.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media on 16 February, Health Ministry Co-Ordinator in charge of Covid-19 and Director – Medical Technological Services Dr. Anver Hamdani said that the number of Covid-19 infections reported last week had risen by 20%, while the number of Covid-19 deaths had also risen by about 17% compared to the previous week.
In addition, he said that the number of Covid-19 patients who were dependent on oxygen (O2) supply and were being treated in intensive care units (ICU) had also increased compared to the previous week.
“This week, the number of Covid-19-infected patients dependent on O2 supply and being treated in ICUs has increased by 12% and 3%, respectively.”
Dr. Hamdani added that 60-65% of the daily reported deaths from Covid-19 infection at present were of those who have not obtained the booster third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
